To measure fluid pressure with minimum disturbance to fluid flow, a miniature pressure transducer can be imbedded and faired into the test surface. Incorporated in the design are piezoresistive elements mounted on a diaphragm, which transform pressure strains into an electrical signal

Main goal of this paper is to present a specific aspect of a recently designed ecological input-output model (ecolio) that on the one hand adopts the traditional monetary flows and that on the other hand transfers ecological relevant physical flows into the monetary scheme. Therefore the provision of natural resources and the absorption of emissions are evaluated in monetary terms. The model suggests, based on a detailed literature review, separate price corridors for each category of resources and emissions. ?ecolio? considers ?Nature? as intermediate sector that provides resources and absorption services as (monetarized) inputs for the conventional intermediate sectors. Since the usage of the considered natural services is currently ?gratis? for the industries, the companies have no incentive to replace resource intensive by nature friendly production. Within this paper it is assumed that the usage of natural services is not free of charge for the industries anymore, which in turn affects the input-output analysis at least twice. Since ?Nature? is considered as intermediate sector, first the Leontief output multipliers will change significantly. Generally the output multiplier become the higher the more natural services are absorbed, i.e. nature-intensive production is ?rewarded? by growing output multipliers. With regard to the concept of a sustainable development, the often positive assessment of high output multipliers is questioned in this paper. In contrast, if two sectors show similar income multipliers (based on the Leontief inverse matrix and the income coefficients) and different output multipliers, the sector with the smaller output multiplier will fulfill the idea of a sustainable development in a more efficient way. Secondly the pricing of natural services will, in the medium term, also lead to changing input coefficients, the paper closes with a brief outline of an exemplary substitution process that could be initiated by the evaluation of natural services.

A procedure for implanting a spinal chamber for longitudinal in vivo imaging of the mouse spinal cord.

Studies in the mammalian neocortex have enabled unprecedented resolution of cortical structure, activity, and response to neurodegenerative insults by repeated, time-lapse in vivo imaging in live rodents. These studies were made possible by straightforward surgical procedures, which enabled optical access for a prolonged period of time without repeat surgical procedures. In contrast, analogous studies of the spinal cord have been previously limited to only a few imaging sessions, each of which required an invasive surgery. As previously described, we have developed a spinal chamber that enables continuous optical access for upwards of 8 weeks, preserves mechanical stability of the spinal column, is easily stabilized externally during imaging, and requires only a single surgery. Here, the design of the spinal chamber with its associated surgical implements is reviewed and the surgical procedure is demonstrated in detail. Briefly, this video will demonstrate the preparation of the surgical area and mouse for surgery, exposure of the spinal vertebra and appropriate tissue debridement, the delivery of the implant and vertebral clamping, the completion of the chamber, the removal of the delivery system, sealing of the skin, and finally, post-operative care. The procedure for chronic in vivo imaging using nonlinear microscopy will also be demonstrated. Finally, outcomes, limitations, typical variability, and a guide for troubleshooting are discussed

Wage Determination in Russia: An Econometric Investigation

Using a firm level dataset from four regions of Russia covering 1996/97, an investigation was carried out into how the surplus created within the firm is divided between profits and wages. An efficient bargaining framework based on the work of Svejnar (1986) is employed which takes into account the alternative wage or outside option available to employees in the firm as well as the value added per employee. Statistical differences in the share of the surplus taken by employees employed in state, private and mixed forms of firms are found. In addition, the results prove sensitive to the presence of outliers and influential observations. A variety of diagnostic methods are employed to identify these influential observations and robust methods are employed to lessen the influence of them. Whereas in practice some of the diagnostic and robust methods utilised proved incapable of identifying or accommodating the gross outlier(s) in the data, the more successful methods included robust regression, Winsorising, the Hadi and Siminoff algorithm, Cook's Distance and Covratio.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39679/3/wp295.pd

Priority monism and essentiality of fundamentality: a reply to Steinberg

Steinberg has recently proposed an argument against Schaffer’s priority monism. The argument assumes the principle of Necessity of Monism, which states that if priority monism is true, then it is necessarily true. In this paper, I argue that Steinberg’s objection can be eluded by giving up Necessity of Monism for an alternative principle, that I call Essentiality of Fundamentality, and that such a principle is to be preferred to Necessity of Monism on other grounds as well
